This article represents the theoretical framework of Aḥmad al-Samʿānī’s conception of Moses as a model for the lover who seeks the beloved who brought him close through caresses and direct speech. Love requires this duality between the lover and the beloved: “He loves them and they love Him.” Al-Samʿānī explains why advancing in the path of love brings about increased harshness and severity, if you want to advance in the Religion of Love, prepare yourself for calling down pain and suffering. Succinctly, adhering to the Religion of Love, is also negating one’s own existence and actualizing one’s own essential poverty.
