The author defines the myth in terms of semantics and terminology and distinguishes it from the legend. He then deals with their understanding among pre-Islamic Arabs and their fixation in people’s minds. Such myths include the Creation Myth, Iram of the Pillar, Luqman’s Eagle, Creatures capable of speech, the metamorphosed, the Jinn, and the Ogre- to mention a few.

He further devotes some of his work to better understand the value of the myth as an element of a society’s civilization, and part of its true, virtual, or imagined history. From a psychological aspect, people value the legend as a spiritual refuge that frees them from inadequacy and weakness against stronger people.
