عرّف الباحث الإسلاموفوبيا بوصفها نزعة جديدة أو طارئة نشأت مع العقود الأخيرة، أو بعد حقبة الحرب الباردة التي حوّلت أنظار الغرب من الشيوعيّة إلى الإسلام. وعلى الرغم من كون المصطلح قديمًا، إلّا أنّ الصناعة الإعلاميّة الحديثة جعلت هذه الظاهرة في قلب الحياة السياسيّة والثقافيّة الأوروبيّة بشكل يوميّ، إذ نقلت الصور السلبيّة والنمطيّة للمسلمين من المجالات الضيّقة إلى رحاب الفضاء العمومي، بحيث أصبحت الإسلاموفوبيا قضيّة رأي عامّ، وظهرت صناعة إعلاميّة متخصّصة في توجيه هذا الرأي العامّ وإعداده لتلعب دورًا رئيسًا في قولبة العقول وتنميطها، والتحكّم في إدارتها.
ويحتاج التقليص من ظاهرة الإسلاموفوبيا في المجتمعات الأوروبيّة والغربيّة – برأي الكاتب – إلى حوار بين الحكماء في الجانبين، وبذل المسلمين جهودًا لإظهار قيمهم الدينيّة السامية وتقديم النماذج الطيّبة للآخرين، وإدانة الإرهاب الذي يمارس باسم دينهم، ويشوّه سمعته، ويؤثّر على صورتهم، انطلاقًا من أنّ الإرهاب هو العدوّ المشترك للإنسانيّة جمعاء، فبوقوفهم ضدّ الإرهاب يكون المسلمون قد وقفوا مع جميع الشعوب بمن فيهم الأوروبيّون، على أساس أنّهم إخوة في الإنسانيّة.
The author defines Islamophobia as a novel tendency that emerged in the last decades, or after the end of the cold war, an event that shifted the West’s attention from communism to Islam. Although Islamophobia is a relatively old term, the modern media industry has placed this phenomenon at the heart of European daily political and cultural life. It brought out negative stereotypical images of Muslims to the forefront, to a point where Islamophobia became a matter of public interest. Media companies who are experts in directing public opinion emerged in parallel and played a main role in molding and directing thought on the matter.
According to the author, limiting Islamophobia in European and Western societies necessitates discussions between intellectuals from both sides. As for Muslims, they must endeavor to show their religion’s moral high values, to provide a good example for others, and condemn acts of terrorism committed in the name of Islam, acts that tarnished its reputation and ruined their image. As terrorism is the common enemy of humanity, by opposing it, Muslims can side with all peoples of the world, not least the Europeans, as brothers in humanity.
