This article seeks to study and explain the methodology of the prominent contemporary orientalist William Chittick in studying and explicating sapiential and mystical texts. In critiquing a number of Orientalists, Chittick seeks to employ the methodology of psychological hermeneutics to explain texts and understand the aims of the authors in line with Islamic understanding. This article displays the faults of sapiential and mystical studies from Chittick’s viewpoint as well as the origin of these faults. It also clarifies his scholarly standards of interpreting these texts while pointing out the main elements of this hermeneutical methodology. The most important of these elements are studying the relations and genealogy of the text, knowing the fundaments of the authors’ ideas and teachings, comparing the opinions of experienced, renowned scholars, paying attention to singular assumptions and various methods, paying attention to terminological meanings, knowing the ontological and personal dimensions of the author and his work, handling the text directly, noting organic relations within the text, noting the different dimensions of the matter at hand, paying attention to the context, mental harmony with the author, asking the right questions, and determining the key issues for the author and the scope of his ideas and teachings.
