The theory of mental existence (al-iʿtibār/al-iddiʿāʾ) denotes an intellectual process with logical underpinnings that demonstrates the way the human mind works in order to formulate metaphors. According to this theory, mental existence comes into play after covering several stages that begin from a simple simile, this is the way a concept is formulated. Although the basics and modes of action of mental existence differ categorically among literary, jurisprudential, legal, and philosophical domains, what all these domains have in common is that the mental aspect (al-iʿtibārī/al-iddiʿāʾī) within their respective theories is never arbitrary or divorced from reality. In other words, if we grant the presence of mental existence in any field, we would be affirming conceptual knowledge (maʿrifa iʿtibāriyya). Al-ʿAllāma al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī, in his own right a leading scholar and a proponent of the principality of existence over essence, addressed this metaphysical theory and applied it, cogently, to ethical and social mental existents. That this theory adduces mental existence does not mean that said conceptual category is in any way arbitrary or haphazard. For this reason, this paper will cite evidence in support of the theory of mental existence.
