Mīr Dāmād’s perpetual incipience lies in the middle between theological insistence on the temporal incipience of the world, and the philosophical demand that the world be preceded by pure non-existence (eternal incipience). His is a view wherein the world was preceded by relative non-existence; it moved from potency to actuality. The world is perpetually incipient, i.e. it comes to being at the level of perpetuity where the intellects dwell. This is the crucial level for the relationship between the Immanent God, residing alone in eternity, and the changing world; the world is, ceaselessly, in utter inferiority.
