ثمّة، بين الإسلام والمسيحيّة، علاقات قُربى وثيقة، وإن باعدت بينهما بعض أيّام التاريخ. ومن المهمّ جدّاً، اليوم، العكوف على تبيانٍ مفصّل للعناصر المشتركة بينهما في الدين والقيَم الأخلاقيّة والقواعد المسلكيّة إذ يمثّلان تجلّياً للبحث عن الخير والحقيقة المدفوعين بنعمة العناية الإلهيّة وبركة الروح القدس، وإن كان للمسيحيّة، لدى الكاتب، فضلٌ حاسم لصلتها المباشرة بالمسيح. ومثل هذه الدراسة ومثل هذا العرض يمهّدان السبيل إلى فهم متبادل أدقّ وأوسع أو إلى تفاهم أكثر شمولاً.

Strong links connect Islam and Christianity, despite the distance revealed in historical records. It is of utmost concern that, today, the commonalities with regard to values and ethics are well studied and discerned as these constitute the finest expression of man’s quest for truth driven by divine bliss and sympathy – even if Christianity, as per the writer, comes first for her direct relationship with Jesus Christ. Such a study and such an account, when undertaken, would pave the way towards a common, broad and more precise understanding or, at least, appreciation.

يدرس الباحث، في النصّ الذي بين أيدينا، حقبةً غلب عليها طابع التنافر الشديد بين المسيحيّة والإسلام؛ تنافرٌ تحوّل من صداميّةٍ عَقَديّة إلى أخرى عسكريّة إبّان الحروب الصليبيّة التي مثّلت القطيعة الكاملة بين الفريقين، وهي المرحلة التي تكرّست في الصور النمطيّة عند كليهما. ويرى الباحث أنّ المسيحيّة المشرقيّة لعبت دوراً كبيراً في التأسيس لهذه القطيعة، لكنّها، إثر الحروب الصليبيّة وبعد سقوط القسطنطينيّة، أدركت أنّ هويّتها لا تتأصّل إلّا حين تنخرط في علاقةٍ إنسانيّة وحوارٍ صادقٍ مع المسلمين. قبل هذا، لم يجد الحوار محلّاً حقيقيّاً له بين الإسلام والمسيحيّة إلّا بين أصحاب النزعات الروحيّة الذين تخطّوا شيطنة الآخر إلى حيث يمكن اللقاء.

In the text at hands, Ahmad Majed goes on to study an era characterized by immense dissonance between Christianity and Islam; a dissonance that developed into a military clash – during the crusades – from a doctrinal disagreement. This was the era wherein the stereotypes and images by which the two groups saw each other was consolidated.

The researcher notices that oriental Christianity had a major role to play in this clash, but, after the crusades and the fall of Constantinople, it arrived at a conviction that its true identity cannot be attained but in a humane relationship and an honest dialogue with the Muslims. Hitherto, dialogue (Islamic-Christian that is) had never found solid grounds except amongst those with spiritual inclinations who have gone beyond demonizing the Other to where honest souls could meet.
