Interfaith dialogue fell in the midst of a severe and rigid polarity that we may call the“gentleness and rigor dualism”. The author discerned a pattern whereby, for certain  historical (actually, political-ideological) readings of the lives of the two founders, the prophet Mohammad – along with Islam – was identified with rigor, Jesus and Christianity with gentleness. It is the recent attention to Sufism, however, and the spread of liberation theology’s experience that helped overcome, to an extent, this rigid dualism. What the author has in mind is an approach to a theme essential to both traditions, the ‘imago Dei’, capable of bringing them together and decomposing many of the strongly adopted false representations.

God is expressed in both his tremendous and fascinating aspects, and His image cannot be but perfect; in other words, His image must express rigor as much as it expresses gentleness – although mercy always prevails –, for only in it, true balance subsists. At the same time, the ‘imago Dei’ and the ‘imitatio’ have solid basis in the theology of both traditions. As such, if we were to regard the two founders as the most perfect image of God, and the two religions as the canonization (not only in the technical sense) and spiritualization of the process of imitation – the finest path to God –, we may, then, be confident that Muslims and Christians will always meet on the basis of common interest in one supreme objective.
