Rites, according to the author, are one of the most significant elements of each religion, to which psychoanalysts pay particular attention for their importance in reflecting esoteric experiences.

Most of the article is devoted to discussing ‘Āshūrāʾ rituals. The author defines ‘Āshūrāʾ and the

Shia understanding of it, and what Hussein symbolizes. Using a Freudian approach, he elucidates that honoring Hussein comes as compensation for his abandonment and disappointment during his life, and analyzes the resulting feelings of guilt and sin toward him. According to Abbas, guilt is transmitted from individuals to family members and then to socio-cultural institutions, which play a role in propagating ideas and values.

The continuous revival of ‘Āshūrāʾ’s commemoration by holding mourning ceremonies and “latm” gatherings indicates the desire for purification, and to follow the hero Hussein in his morals and manners, and in fight against oppression at all times.Performing rhythmic clapping on the chest.
