The philosophical bent has been the most prominent feature in Sheikh al-Zanjānī’s character: he held the autochthonous nature of philosophical thought in the intellectual system of Islam, adopting the theory of essential movement (al-ḥaraka al-jawhariyya) pioneered by Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Shirāzī. He also established proofs for the principality of existence at the levels of actuality and instauration, and he was of the first scholars who introduced the term “epistemology” into Islamic philosophy in general, and transcendental philosophy in particular. Of the consequences of Sheikh al-Zanjānī’s theory on the corporeality of the resurrection was the possibility of man reaching his perfection after death, which means that the relation between the self and the body interred in earth persists beyond the grave.
