The intellectual works of al-ʿAllāmahaṭ-Ṭabāṭabāʾī have provoked many a question that speak to the modern world and trace answers for many questions that include questions on language per se and the role it plays in understanding the scripture. That is why, it is deemed crucial to reflect on al-ʿAllāmah’s view on the very question of language and the thereof nature and origin, to, then, expound upon his view on the relation between speech and intellect, reaching to an applied, crucial stance on the relation between the Qurʾān, language, and intellect. We, thus, aim at shedding light on the importance of this subject and the profound implications thereof on many issues.

The terminological meaning of “revelation” in the Qurʾān (Divine speech delivered to prophets) encompasses, in effect, the diverse semantic connotations of the [Arabic] word, which are: (1) Divine guidance by virtue of creation; (2) Divine inspiration towards Good in given situations; and (3) instigation (waswasah). This, ultimately, admitted multiple agents of revelation within Qurʾānic contexts, and underscored the plurality of the roles revelation plays according to the Islamic understanding. Yet, in Islam, revelation remains one with scripture. As such, in terms of its scriptural existence, and its various influences (be they cultural, axiological, moral and so on), revelation lends itself to diverse fields of study. Indeed, to study revelation in its dynamics, one needs to go beyond the exclusivity of method, and tackle it as it presented itself, i.e. in the written text.

Nasr Hamed Abu Zayd traces the stagnation he sees in the life of Muslim societies back to the stagnant mentality monopolizing all attempts at understanding scripture. He attributes this stagnancy to: (1) severing scripture from its objective, historical circumstances; (2) giving precedence to the [intentions of the] author, not the receiver; and (3) maintaining a metaphysical existence, of scripture, predating its historical existence. Abu Zayd, then, elaborates upon the distinction between the “meaning” of a text, or the original sense which lies in understanding it in accordance with its social and cultural contexts, and its “significance” which is contingent upon reading the text in light of current circumstances. He makes use of this distinction to deny objective interpretations that are not subject to the circumstances and contexts of its current reader. Objections to Abu Zayd include his dissociating of “meaning” and [the author’s] intention, his depicting of how scripture relates to language and culture as direct and irrevocable, and, at times, his explicit deviation from what is unequivocally stated by the Qurʾān itself.

The impulse of faith directs a trajectory, towards the world of the invisible, perfectly outlined in the qurʾān. The impulse, in itself, entails the existence within man of apposite capacities to comprehend the invisible and have faith in it. These capacities are the fundaments of the inmost consciousness (wijdān) of faith in humans. In a word, the human construct, in its very creation, retains the fundaments of faith-belief, and is accordingly oriented. The role of choice (freewill), here, is to settle the issue of how to bring the diverse elements of this construct together through accommodating the various capacities of faith – heart, nature, and inner sense – and endowing the human soul with unity and concord. It is through the act of faith – for it alone is capable of simulating the connection between humans and the invisible world – that the dissonant elements are brought together. Once faith firmly settles in the individual’s inmost consciousness, it flows thereof to the collective’ through the generative and effusive virtues brought about this settlement.

For William Chittick, the ambiguity of the Qurʾānic command arises out of the disagreement among people about the conflicting external meaning of the Qurʾānic verses regarding the universal command and the religious command. The other cause of ambiguity is the Qurʾān’s usage of terminology that is not unanimous among the adherents of all heavenly religions, which allows for the possibility of multiple exegeses and interpretations.

Chittick observes a difference between the people of love and the people of knowledge. Regardless of the importance of religious interpretations based on doubt in this relative world, interpretations arising out of certitude make more sense when dealing with the one true Reality in this world.

When considering love in context of the three principles of faith (uṣūl al-dīn), it appears that the texts discuss the topic from four different angles, which are it being an eternal reality, the motive for creation, the force behind divine guidance, and the final goal of human becoming. In this light, love becomes the longing for union (wiṣāl/ittiḥād), whose goal is the lover’s coming together with the beloved without separation. Sufis have understood love as force that paves the way of the meeting of God and man.
