For William Chittick, the ambiguity of the Qurʾānic command arises out of the disagreement among people about the conflicting external meaning of the Qurʾānic verses regarding the universal command and the religious command. The other cause of ambiguity is the Qurʾān’s usage of terminology that is not unanimous among the adherents of all heavenly religions, which allows for the possibility of multiple exegeses and interpretations.

Chittick observes a difference between the people of love and the people of knowledge. Regardless of the importance of religious interpretations based on doubt in this relative world, interpretations arising out of certitude make more sense when dealing with the one true Reality in this world.

When considering love in context of the three principles of faith (uṣūl al-dīn), it appears that the texts discuss the topic from four different angles, which are it being an eternal reality, the motive for creation, the force behind divine guidance, and the final goal of human becoming. In this light, love becomes the longing for union (wiṣāl/ittiḥād), whose goal is the lover’s coming together with the beloved without separation. Sufis have understood love as force that paves the way of the meeting of God and man.
