Al-ʿAllāma al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī at times considers the incumbent (mā yanbaghī) and the proscribed (mā lā yanbaghī) mental existents that man takes upon himself for the act to become necessary. In regards to moral good and moral evil, al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī has two views: 1- moral good and moral evil are mental existents that are in harmony or disharmony with a certain person’s character. Since people’s characters differ, moral good and moral evil are relative. 2- Moral good and moral evil are nothing but a given act’s harmony or disharmony with the intended purpose. This second meaning advanced by al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī implies that he considered moral good and moral evil secondary philosophical intelligibles (maʿqūl falsafī thānī) although he never stated as much. It is central to distinguish between these two meanings, something that none of the commentators on al-ʿAllāma’s work so far have undertaken. In this article, the authors have sought, through a comparative approach to Risālat al-ʿItibārāt and Tafsīr al-Mīzān, to elucidate al-ʿAllāma’s theory and demonstrate the difference between it and the views of the relativists and the skeptics.
