The two disputants of the “theism/atheism-question” lack a common ground that would provide the bare minimum that might bring the dialogue between them to fruition, which in turn turned their dialogue into a slew of offensive and defensive vitriol consisting of the same tools, proofs, arguments, and accusations on both sides, such as the claim that the proofs of God’s existence are not complete, to which theists reply that proofs of his non-existence are, equally, not complete as well. And much like this goes on as each party casts doubt on the rational standpoint of the other and the epistemological tools they use, also accusing each other of mental incapacity and rational deficiency. However, this cycle can be broken by assuming another perspective that considers the ontological context of atheists or theists. Yes, this approach will not resolve the essential problem – the simple and direct problem – vis à vis the question of God’s existence. However, it may prove useful in drawing the lines of the conflict and traversing from thereon to a sound rational interrogation of the basics of this conflict and how to resolve or coexist with them.

Upon reflecting on al-ʿAllāmahaṭ-Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s philosophical works, it is inevitable to stop by his ʾUṣūl al-Falsafah w-al-Manhaj al-Wāqiʿī [the Principles of Philosophy and the Method of Realism] per se as it represents the most crucial pillar in the philosophical tradition of al-ʿAllāmah. It holds true to posit that this book is deemed as one of most mature philosophical experiences approaching the treatises of western philosophy – those ontological and epistemological, equally – imparted with an Islamic breath. The following article, accordingly, introduces this book.

aṭ-Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s understanding of man is manifested through his contribution to tracing out a system of values that takes into account the sensible contingents to reestablish the very connection with the world of the Unseen. The contingents, qua contingents, are none other than instruments underlying ontological truths. They stand not as an ultimate aim as such. Therefore, al-ʿAllāmahaṭ-Ṭabāṭabāʾī often leads us to explore what lies beyond such contingents that once singled out from the origin thereof might lead to the reduction of the human truth unto the empirical or absolute, nominal dimension, which alludes to a vicious circle whereby the contingents are idolized, drifting from their original aims towards nihilistic behaviors that connote abandon, takfīr, as well as the eclipse of the human identity. Accordingly, it is instrumental to reread the human entity in light of the anthropology of the soul and self in aṭ-Ṭabāṭabāʾī, as it is crucial to bring about an understanding of the process of man in the levels of his ontological and teleological dimensions.

The soul (Atman) constitutes the very essence of human nature and is analogous to the supreme soul of Brahman. As such, it is simple and cannot be grasped by the sensory organs or through mental analysis. Religious experience, alone, allows for arriving at that primordial constituent in every human being. Thus constituted, the soul dwells in the human heart, attempting to revitalize the elements that lead to redemption through resemblance of its origin, and unity with it. When man is heedful of the purity of his primordial nature, he unites with Brahman, and arrives at the state of peace of mind and soul. This does not suggest renouncing the world, or somehow fleeing from it altogether, but rather stands for organizing the world through a set of conciliatory and ethical actions, far removed from any personal advantage or profit, but based on an element of harmony that enables man to reach his very pure origin.

In this article, William Chittick presents Ibn ʿArabī’s view on love as displayed in his al-Futūḥāt al-makkiyya wherein he explains the divine saying, “I was a treasure that was not known, so I loved to be known. Hence I created the creatures and I made Myself known to them, and thus they came to know Me.” This love has two roots: divine love that is the origin of all love, and human love of nonexistents (aʿdām) or immutable entities (aʿyān thābita). For Ibn ʿArabī, God in His essence is unknowable because love is attached to nonexistent things, whereas God is existence itself. The sign of the Perfect Man’s (al-insān al-kāmil) love is absolute poverty (faqr) that causes him to love all things for being self-disclosures of the exalted Real.

The empirical scientist and the jurist are alike in that they both function on speculation (ẓann), the empiricist method is a method based on speculation and leading to speculative results. The jurist does the very same thing when seeking to uncover the truth. Because knowledge is the very existence (ʿayn wujūd) of God the Exalted and exists but through Him, it is infinite, and it makes use of reason (al-ʿaql) to achieve certainty in empiricist matters. As for the humanities, they benefit from philosophy because it is a tool that clarifies the different subdivisions of religion and answers the charges levelled against the humanities. Above all, the purpose of philosophy is man’s knowledge of himself: his essential poverty and need of God.

The theory of mental existence (al-iʿtibār/al-iddiʿāʾ) denotes an intellectual process with logical underpinnings that demonstrates the way the human mind works in order to formulate metaphors. According to this theory, mental existence comes into play after covering several stages that begin from a simple simile, this is the way a concept is formulated. Although the basics and modes of action of mental existence differ categorically among literary, jurisprudential, legal, and philosophical domains, what all these domains have in common is that the mental aspect (al-iʿtibārī/al-iddiʿāʾī) within their respective theories is never arbitrary or divorced from reality. In other words, if we grant the presence of mental existence in any field, we would be affirming conceptual knowledge (maʿrifa iʿtibāriyya). Al-ʿAllāma al-Ṭabāṭabāʾī, in his own right a leading scholar and a proponent of the principality of existence over essence, addressed this metaphysical theory and applied it, cogently, to ethical and social mental existents. That this theory adduces mental existence does not mean that said conceptual category is in any way arbitrary or haphazard. For this reason, this paper will cite evidence in support of the theory of mental existence.
