With contentions against transcendentalism, Habermas proceeds from the actual social context to put forth a moral philosophy grounded in discussion as a pretext to the restoration of human nature. Along these lines, he aims at proposing a solution for the problem of reason with a view of studying the conditions of possibility for the social individual, without straying from the perspective of the modern understanding of the world. Habermas holds that the solution is in curbing instrumental reason by rendering it communicative. He thus directs his project toward reformulating the communicative relation between individualism and social life, upholding reason and respecting freedom, on one hand, and preserving universality and practicality, on the other, through what he terms “the ethics of discussion.”

The soul (Atman) constitutes the very essence of human nature and is analogous to the supreme soul of Brahman. As such, it is simple and cannot be grasped by the sensory organs or through mental analysis. Religious experience, alone, allows for arriving at that primordial constituent in every human being. Thus constituted, the soul dwells in the human heart, attempting to revitalize the elements that lead to redemption through resemblance of its origin, and unity with it. When man is heedful of the purity of his primordial nature, he unites with Brahman, and arrives at the state of peace of mind and soul. This does not suggest renouncing the world, or somehow fleeing from it altogether, but rather stands for organizing the world through a set of conciliatory and ethical actions, far removed from any personal advantage or profit, but based on an element of harmony that enables man to reach his very pure origin.

Society—political constraints considered—is the vessel wherein human nature dwells. The fact that the fuqahāʾ (jurisprudents) overlooked the significance of human sociality (ijtimāʿ), in addition to lacking any clear vision as to the Maqāṣid (purposes; objectives) of the vicegerency (of man), adversely affected the uncovering and codification of the integrative pathways (of human perfection) prescribed by the Qurʾān. The prescribed integrative track is complicated at both levels, the material and the spiritual, and human nature is inherently transcending (material and spiritual restraints), even illusive and uncontainable. As such, the legislative Qurʾānic approach needs to be correspondingly sophisticated so as to surmount material and spiritual impediments, while preserving human freedom necessary to deal with incessantly impending tests and trials (balāʾāt), and furnishing the grounds for the proper socio-political conditions  that would prevent political restraints—as necessary as these are—from hampering the fulfillment of man’s potentials.

The self regards itself directly in the context of its becoming, and indirectly (reflectively) through regarding mankind in general. This phenomenological apprehension benefits from the capabilities of language, the Arabic language in particular, in order to reveal the uniqueness of the self, in light of its ability to function as both the seer and the one who is seen at once, as it discerns the effect of the other amid its very self. The other is intertwined with the self, not merely its symptom, but an existential component thereof. The self is indebted to the other that fills in its emptiness. In displaying its indebtedness, moreover, the self gathers itself, overcoming its egoism and liberating itself from heedlessness

The decision of assigning a vicegerent on earth led to deep division in the heavens, a division between angels who desired earth in the image of heaven, and Satan who was unable to adapt to the universal meaning implicit in human nature (fiṭrah). Pursuant to its vicegerency, mankind formulates history and cultivates the earth wherein, as per the divine will, experiences, trials and hardships are amply animated, requiring an admixture of the holiness of the impeccable and the Satanism of corruption. Man, who was provided knowledge of the Names, universal and particular, moves responsibly, driven by his isthmic nature (ṭabīʿah barzakhiyyah) that arises from the material world of impressions, and transcends towards worlds that outstretch as far as the levels of Being extend.

In the humanities, as well as in modern biology, man was reduced to a biological being, whereby the internal, hidden, element is minimalized. Philosophical and religious approaches, on the other hand, were confined to the rational aspect of human beings, taking those material aspects, of human beings, to be merely preparative conditions for the spiritual life. In scripture, however, the basic starting point for any understanding of human nature remains that man emerged from clay and it is to clay that he returns. Such a scriptural truth instigated a surge of questioning and protest among the dwellers of the upper realm (the angels and ʾIblīs), and by its virtue, man becomes the addressee of all Divine warning and encouragement. If revelation, in its very essence, takes note of the animal aspect of man, an aspect which accompanies his existence inasmuch as he lives by thought and feeling together, then we are entitled to ask: is man an animal, characterized at some stage by being rational? Or is he a rational being, characterized at some stage by being an animal? The intention here is to pressure towards discovering the weight of the animal life within human nature, and to contemplate the essence, the functions and the constituting elements upon which this nature stands.

While, traditionally, the approach has been to delve into man through his nature, what is herein suggested is to study the nature through man himself, so that man becomes the significatory principle as to his nature. To this end, two paths can be taken, (1) Scripture on the one hand, and (2) the self, inasmuch as it can read itself, on the other. (1) is resorted to in this regard since natures were granted, to whatever, or whoever, possesses a nature by the granter of religion; the source is one, that is. (2), on the other hand, is justified by the fact that the self is present to itself, and nature is one of its internal affairs. Having understood nature through either of these non-exclusive paths, we can afford to read the significations of the nature’s acts through nature itself.

The heart (al-qalb) is a fluid reality, changing in accordance with the appearance of Divine Manifestations. The flux it entertains, in terms of behavioral accidents, discloses the very movement of the essence of human meaning (al-lubb). The action of the heart is what generates the human identity, for it represents the human nature that was constituted through (1) the meditations of the self, (2) the epistemic extrapolations of the “intelligent heart” (al-fuʾād), and (3) the insights, into reality, of the heart itself. The heart, moreover, is multi-faceted: one of its faces turns towards the body (the clay), another towards the universal meaning of the rational soul, a third towards the individuated personal identity, and still another face associates with the light of God. In the man of perpetuity, these faces come to an intricate balance, for he is the possessor of an isthmic (barzakhī) heart which combines the spirit with the clay; it is this heart which entitles him to the tawḥidī vision, and to the gifts of fiṭrī knowledge and Divine trust.
